Verinda of Send This miniature figure is not based on an existing full sized dummy board but on an early 20th century painting. It was common practice for dummy board artists to copy paintings or prints and many boards of this kind were made in the 19th century. Sadly we rarely know the name of the animal depicted but here we see the famous Great Dane Verinda of Send by the famous dog artist Geoffrey Williams painted in 1933. For our depiction of The Long Gallery at Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire, we needed a large dog upon which Lady Cherry could rest her hand and this lovely dog was a natural choice. Our Great Dane dummy board would be an excellent figure for the miniature dolls house hall, or the large sitting room. Alternatively she would look just as good taking the air in the garden. Flossie CatBased on a modern PastMastery dummy board of a friend’s cat, Flossie is made on one piece of MDF painted in oils and varnished with a crackle glaze to give the appearance of age. Animals are quite commonly made as dummy boards and the earliest extant figures of cats date to the first quarter of the 19th century. They are most often seen as single cats sitting on a stool or on a book which might have been made to sit in the empty grate in the summer. Sadly not many survive as they were at the mercy of childrens’ games, the brooms of servants and the odd stray spark. Flossie is a well behaved and well loved family pet and was three years of age when she was painted in March 2008 If you would like to purchase an item, or if you have a question, please contact Susanne.
