Finished The result is a Silent Companion painted by Susanne of her husband Stephen dressed in a costume of the early 17th century. He wears the tight ruff of the preceding century with a jerkin of fine embroidered chamois leather, slashed to show the padded red damask doublet underneath. Padded trunk hose and padded breeches of the same red damask and shoes with silk rosettes complete the costume. The head was painted from good photographs and then the rest was "constructed" from various portraits of famous people of the turn of the 17th century, notably Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, and Henry Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton. The whole figure stands 52 inches tall. | |
